Make me your in-house behavior change and gamification expert

Did you know that hiring an in-house behavioral scientist is the new big thing? I can help your organization's environmental behavior, data, and gamification design for just a few hours a month when you join my monthly design insights program.

Your organization has an important mission and you know it.

But does everyone else know it? And will they act? I bet they don't act enough.

I can make you one promise. It's that your organization can get better and faster at making change happen.

I know this is true because I've seen the power that environmental behavior psychology can wield – and I know that it's hardly being implemented any where near its full potential. In many cases, it's not even being used at all.

You need to bring environmental psychology and gamification to the core of your strategy for impact. It has the power to unlock rapid change and bring you (and the planet) big rewards if you use it properly.

There's a new trend of companies hiring a "Chief Behavior Psychologist." This is a good thing.

There's a catch though – there aren't many of us around who know this stuff (especially when it comes to the psychology of sustainability) and a full-time expert is expensive. You may not need someone for forty hours a week, anyway.

I can help you for a few of hours (or days) a month so you can get the best outcome - world class input of this rare and powerful knowledge base at the scale and price you need.

I provide top-level strategic direction as well as detailed behavior design materials for governments, cities, non-profits, utilities, and corporations on how to get better results on social and environmental impact goals. I have a deep knowledge of the academic research on environmental behavior change, I design and develop gamified software interfaces, all backed up with a strong technical background in environmental engineering.

Let's start
.I will reimagine (or revise) your design, communications, and technology strategy using the most influential evidence-based behavior, gamification, and data techniques so that you can achieve dramatically better pro-environmental action in your community.

We'll work together month by month. If you need to scale back or it's not working out, you can cancel any time.

What will we do together?

We start by understanding your data and the action you need people to take. Then, we work out a plan.

Here are the types of expertise I can provide for you:

1. Behavior mapping: We can kick off with a behavior mapping workshop. This is a three-to-eight hour session where we tease out the specific action you need your community to take and we carefully match up the best gamification and behavior techniques for your unique situation. This process becomes the skeleton of any software or UI/UX design.

Organizations often make the mistake of clustering too many behaviors together – or they don't think about the actions at all (yikes!). We need to get specific and detailed about each action we are asking people to do.

The behavior mapping process specifically isolates each of the actors, the first contact made, the specific action, cue, data source, gamification tools, rewards, and the desired measurable result.

2. Data disclosure: Develop a data disclosure plan and technology requirements for your data capture. We'll work out how to manage it, and how to present it publicly in a way that will get you closer to a "Fitbit for the Planet" model. This might involve sensors, databases, APIs, public screens, satellite images, drone/aircraft data capture, and map-based solutions.

3. Gamification: How to design gamification tools such as competitions and social comparison around your core data to drive action in your community. We'll look at various rankings such as leaderboards, journey, characters, badges, and progress tracking.

4. Social norms and comparison: I'll help you incorporate the appropriate language to leverage social norms in your storytelling by revising your copywriting and images to get people to copy the behaviors of others.

5. A goal: Determining a specific environmental goal you explicitly ask your community to commit to.

6. Reward system: How to design a reward system for engaging people into action. It could be chime, smiley, social rank, character, compliment, or a novel animation. Humans love to be rewarded for a job well done.

7. Progress tracking: Developing progress bars and systems to show the beginning, end, and progress your user makes with measurable systems and designs.

8. Social imitation: Devise social media campaigns to generate action and traction such as competitions, clubs, and examples. We'll look at how to get people to bring their friends into the movement and design tools for social influence and imitation.

9. User interface design: Design user interfaces for environmental behavior change projects, campaigns, certifications, or labels. I design software solutions for web, apps, browser extensions, and public kiosks.

10. Pledges: How to use pledges and promises (knows as "commitment devices" to get your community to commit and follow through on desired behaviors.

11. Behavior charts: I create behavior or sticker charts that your community can use to track the actions we want them to do. These can be low tech downloads or behavior charts in an app or software design.

12. Maps: Creating maps that show your desired environmental data and prompt actions.

13. Color: How to use color to signal or cue a behavior, such as red is bad and green is good.

14. Characters: How to incorporate character animals that give expressions to drive behavior. The character would look happy when the data is doing well or look sad if performance is down.

15. Priming: Create immersive and emotionally compelling educational experiences that get people "primed" for a behavioral intervention later on.

16. Literature review: I review and summarize academic literature around your organizations' needs.

17. Future visioning: We can illustrate a vision of the future world that will inspire your team and community to more deeply engage in the desired behavior.

19 Storytelling: How to create onboarding, presentations, slideshows, videos, and social media that tell the story of why your mission matters using a proven story-telling template.

20. Creative ideas: Creative direction, innovation and idea storming. I can come up with interesting out-of-the-box ideas using novel mediums such as AR/XR, playing cards, outdoor artworks, experiences, posters, and collaborations.
